"Glipped?"

:D

That reminds me of that chimp with the furry hat from the old Lost in Space series, Penny's pet alien, that said "bloop" or "gloop" all the time.

Gloop gloop gloop!

A mind is a terrible thing. Period.

The VIPs is on TCM tomorrow morning, if you need a copy of that. Welles is good as Max Buda (and looks like Buddha!) and has scenes with Margaret Rutherford (a few years before Falstaff.)

I'm watching Mr. Skeffington - the most absurd melodrama I've ever seen in my life. And Welles thought the music in Shanghai was bad! You have to see/hear this one to believe it.

Erskine Sanford appears, playing a doctor.

Does TCM show films in widescreen when appropriate?

Michael Anderegg's Welles/Shakespeare book, when he mentions how Olivier's HAMLET was used by critics as a convenient stick to beat Welles's MACBETH with.

This is a major theme of "Orson's Shadow", where Welles says Olivier shot Hamlet like a bad Joan Crawford picture.. "Orson Welles, Shakespeare, and Popular Culture" shows the Life Magazine articles from 1948 contrasting Macbeth and Hamlet.

kubrik's THE KILLING is fabulous. welles was right when he said the killing is a copy of the asphalt jungle, and kubrik is a better director than huston, which i don't agree with, and it's a shitty thing to say about a pal. i wonder if there was a rift between them at the time.

Pals or no, maybe that's just what Welles' opinion was. Both films are really excellent.

TCM seems to be concluding its special Shelly Winters tribute tonight...

Tomorrow it's back to the original schedule, including Rick Schmidlin's 4 hour reconstruction of Erich von Stroheim's Greed tommorrow night at 11:15 PM EST or so...

Tomorrow evening (Friday the 27th) TCM is playing The Stranger and Journey into Fear. It's hard to find a good copy of the former and you can't buy the latter in the US, so this might be your last heads-up.

The showing of Greed did not include the short documentary with Rick Schmidlin and Stroheim's son, so if you've got it, hold on to it as it is a rarity.

TCM also showed Souls for Sale, which includes a brief segment with Stroheim rehearsing Jean Hersholt for one of Marcus' scenes. Probably a re-enactment, but still very cool. I think that same footage can also been seen in Richard Kozarski's documentary The Man You Loved To Hate, which is available from KINO on the Foolish Wives DVD.

The print of Journey into Fear which TCM has is plagued by artifacts, lines and scratches...maybe that is the reason it hasn't come to DVD yet. I haven't compared it with the EU DVD yet...
