Store Hadji wrote:The BBC Four ident with Welles digitally inserted into a warm Christmassy living room and giggling at clips of Kane on a little television was certainly a surprise. Perhaps untrue of the man who refused to watch his own films but most effective and amusing nonetheless.

I've just watched this on BBC4. I don't feel confident to review it but i did thoroughly enjoy it. Simon Callow narrates throughout and is filmed in Ronda Spain,Paris and Bordeaux, London including in a ballet school to illustrate Welles Lady In Ice and in Italy. He interviews actor Peter Sallis about Moby Dick Rehearsed who said he fell in love with Welles, Keith Baxter about Chimes At Midnight including an obligatory Welles gluttony tale and Dominique Antoine about The Other Side Of The Wind.Clips from F For Fake, Citizen Kane,The Stranger,The Lady From Shanghai,Chimes At Midnight,The Third Man ,Othello,Mr. Arkadin,Don Quixote [not Franco as it has Welles footage in it],several clips from unreleased films listed as The Lost Films Of Orson Welles,The Trial and The Immortal Story.TV footage from Eartha Kitt interview 1957,press conference 1955,undated interview with Kenneth Williams,1955 interview,Orson Welles Sketchbook,Aound The World Of Orson Welles,In The Land Of Don Quixote, The Movies Present Orson Welles 1967.Arena, and Moniter 1962 with Huw Wheldon.Newsreel footage War of The Worlds Hoax,Citizen Kane premiere,Welles meets the press. That was quite lovely. Thank you Mr. Callow. "What did Orson Welles find in the Old World that he couldn't find in the New?" "The public's love?" For a few years there, at least.

I could have done without the Beatrice-restored scenes from Othello (preferring clips from any of the three original versions) and the Franco-dubbed scenes from Don Quixote (instead of one of the sections Welles edited and dubbed himself,) and there's no mention of Portrait of Gina, Filming Othello or such major unfinished projects as Orson's Bag or The Deep, but it does cover a lot of topical ground and there's already quite a lot to try to fit into an hour's documentary.

One nagging point was Callow presuming that Welles' guilt over "killing his father" informs his performance in the rejection scene in Falstaff, and while that's possible I didn't see any compelling evidence presented.

I saw ORSON WELLES OVER EUROPE last night and must say I thought it was quite marvelous! Glenn Anders couldn't join me, but I’m hoping he will get to see it soon.

I enjoyed a couple of Sherry Flips while watching the program (from Jerez, Spain) and as John Collier would say, "The Touch of Nutmeg makes it." Thankfully, I had the nutmeg on hand to make the flips quite “perfect.”

Is there any news on Vol. 3 of his biography?
