Corinth Arkadin - and other Welles on VHS for trade

VHS, LD, or DVD

Postby Fredric » Thu Mar 07, 2002 11:01 am

I just got the Corinth version of Mr. Arkadin, which I will compare to the other versions in an Arkadin thread. The VHS was made directly from the film print they had. It's probably the best quality out there.

I'm easy with trades as there is a lot of Welles that I don't have or at least don't have in good quality:

Wants (all VHS copies):
Decent copy of The Immortal Story
Decent copy of One Man Band
The Other Side of the Wind :)
Or make me an offer (doesn't have to be Welles)

Fredric, Arkadin, among many of his other characters, does tickle my fancy. But Im really looking for more of the radio shows than anything. Going by the list at Lilly, he did probably 1,000 shows. I've been able to find only about 30.

As for The Magnificent Ambersons, mine's only a copy. Since I read the articles how Mr. Welles was concerning it, I'd feel as if I would hear him, as they did, while playing it.

Bye now!

Results: This Corinth Arkadin is clearly the best version of the film in terms of narrative and pacing. Yes, the Confidential Report is acceptable -- and avialable in better quality, for sure -- but there are pure Welles-ian nuances in the Corinth Arkadin which are a pleasure.

I couldn't agree more - the Corinth version, in every meaningful sense, is the the only version of Arkadin worth seeing - confidential comes a good second, but the Corinth version, which runs a little over 99 minutes is a MUST have for any serious Welles fan

Hello all,

I'm back from a two-week vacation in Scotland. Sorry I haven't been here to respond to Arkadin requests. I'll get to everyone who wrote me on Monday.

didn't you guys notice the different looks of the 3 arkadins? the preferable one does not have the same look as the one in the number 2 slot? the one in number 2 slot has a certain stylelized look, that admitedly as the generations of copies grow that is lost. when i fist saw the version in the number 2 slot from it's original video it had luminous, stylelized look that the arkadin in the number 1 slot did not have. and the #3 slot has different takes in some scenes.

collect them all, they are all great. i have all 3 and the least watched is the one in the #1 slot. i don't know, i guess i like the flaws.
