The Magnificent Ambersons LD

I want to see The Magnificent Ambersons and their is a Laser Disc place in my area that most likely has a rental copy. Can anyone tell me what is on this as to the extras?

There's a great commentary along with the film. I think most of the extras are text; I'd have to dig out my copy to see what else is on there.

If you can rent it, go for it. It would make a great dvd package as is, but since it absolutely will not be released, snag yourself a copy of this fabled LD version if you can.

Gonna see if I can rent it and rip a copy for personal use. I wonder how hard it will be to copy from LD? I remember making VHS dubs off LD in the 80's...so shouldn't be too hard.

I used to copy LDs to VHS back in the early 90s. On one tape would be the film (remembering to pause the tape when it was time to flip the disc over) and on another would be the film with commentary. You should be able to do the same thing with a dvd recorder (though if there's copyprotection on the LD the dvd recorder might refuse to copy it - you'd have to dust off the vcr in that case.) I hope they have that old thing there for you!

I have both editions of the Criterion laserdisc and there is no copyprotection on any disc or the player and i have made dvd copies of laserdisc movies that are not on dvd yet. The only thing the Criterion does not have is the trailer which is only found on the VHS tape version.

The trailer can also be found on the French DVD, which also has Orson and Bogdonavich talking about Ambersons for about 50 minutes. Unfortunately the picture is much inferior to the laserdisc.

NOTE: There are actually two versions of the French DVD. The one that I have is in a slim-line case (with a blue & white cover) and does not have the trailer or the outtakes from TIOW.

Yeah, there are over 20 hours of taped interviews with Welles that PB hasn't released. I'd rather not have them sanitized, but I hope they show up in some form in the next few decades...

Hast thou all heard the This Is Orson Welles audio with PB? It was issued on audiotape and then discontinued. I've heard it after downloading it somewhere (i don't remember), and its abridged (material that was in the book was not in the audio).

That's the abridged and sanitized version. It's great, but was selected from something like 25 hours of taped interviews. PB should sell the complete thing online and avoid the publishers (might not be able to avoid BWS though - Daddy saying bad things might tarnish his image.)

I think it could improve his image, at least in those circles which still believe Welles was an obese, failed, has-been director who could only support himself by selling cheap wine, et cetera...

I have a LD rip of the criterion disc that I did a nice IVTC on so it is now in 24p. I ripped the commentary and all the extras before my LD player broke. One of these days I'll add it to the trade list. Turner still shows the same print.

The audio THIS IS ORSON WELLES does have a few details not in the book such as Tim Holt working as an insurance salesman in Oklahoma but the full tapes do not to be made available to everyone.
