or is it going to be based on the orson welles radio version?

It will be based on the book. The radio show was unique to its format and won't ever be duplicated in this day and age.

Despite Tom Cruise making an absolute balls-up of "Vanilla Sky", I am looking forward to this War of the Worlds, mainly because the 1954 movie version is so unsatisfying.

I hope this version uses the original time and setting, and sticks to the tripods.

If he updates it to modern times, and is unable to resist the temptation to insert jingoistic grandstanding speeches, he might as well call it "Independence Day 2".
