Spielberg - His Generation's Orson Welles?

Including those who have made films ABOUT Welles

The Lynch connection is not that far off, really. "Lady From Shanghai" and "Touch Of Evil" seem highly influential on Lynch's work, the only films I can think of off-hand prior to "Blue Velvet" or "Wild At Heart" that capture that dizzying blend of nightmare tension and grotesque humor.

Well put- The Trial is another thats seems especially influential - Another thing- I think both use the crime genre as vehicle for reflections on justice and morality. (Personally I feel that maybe Lynch is darker in his crime-based psycho dramas, Welles tends to let some rays of light shine in his dark visions or at least brings a greater sense of a balance of light and darkness).

Cordially,

Mark

The remarks by Roger Ryan, etimh and catbuglah about David Lynch's Wellsian qualities and temperament reminded me that had a similar reaction in a review of MULHOLLAND DRIVE for Epinions.com. The film is full of references to LADY FROM SHANGHAI. Here is the URL:

BTW, this review is my most successful review, in terms of readership, for a single film. [The most successful reviews at Epinions are "Ten Best" lists.] Nearly 10,500 people have read it. It is the third most read review of a single picture on the Epinions site.
