My Top Three Directors

Including those who have made films ABOUT Welles

Thinking about this thread, I was hard-pressed to find a third director to add to Welles and Terry Gilliam. Maybe Tati. Too many others to decide upon, really.

My three favorite directors are Orson Welles, Orson Welles and Orson Welles. But to be fair, I'll say Welles, Laughton and Mann. "Night Of The Hunter" is the "Kane" of all horror films. Anthony Mann's 40's-noir-classics, "T-Men" and "Raw Deal" or any other masterpiece from the Mann ouvre is worth re-watching.

I'm a big Anthony Mann fan myself -- just love his Jimmy Stewart western phase. One of my Mann films is a little-talked about 'God's Little Acre', with the talented cast of Robert Ryan, Buddy Hackett, Aldo Ray, Michael Landon, Jack Lord and Tina Louise... A real different tale that, incredibly, was considered risque for its time.
Oh, my director trio would include Orson Welles, John Huston and Stanley Kubrick, with special tips of the hat to Woody Allen, Chaplin, Lubitsch and Wilder.

I've been wondering why, too. I think it may be because I really like the way all three (Welles, Huston, and Frankenheimer) use wide-angle lenses.

Favorite three directors is tough! But.... Welles, Coen Brothers, Keaton (with nods to Huston, Hawks, and Guest). Whew....
