Is this the same as the spanish dvd mentioned in the film section of the site? How is the picture quality? Any subtitle problems?

It could be the same, but the dvd cover is slightly different and a review mentions it being from Brazil. Same one is being sold on ebay and states brazil.

yeah, I saw that it is from Brazil, I wondered if it was just some sort of copy though. I am much more interested in this one than the Spain version, since of course my dvd player will actually play this one.

Don't fear buying a Region 2 dvd. Just rip it with DVD Shrink (freeware)and you'll get a region-free backup copy. Then burn it to dvd with DVD Decrypter (also freeware.) This will play on your computer and on some standalone dvd players so you can watch it on TV. One of my standalones will, the other won't. I prefer watching movies on the computer since the screen is higher resolution and there's no TV-overlay chopping the sides off the picture. No, I haven't bought an HDTV yet.

I have this

I have this version (same cover at least).

No English subtitles on it (I think that should CERTAINLY be an option if a Region 1 ever comes to the US. I mean, it's Shakespeare!!!). Watching it with headphones allowed me to hear/appreciate the dialog better (it's often tough, otherwise).

The running time on this version is several minutes under what it should be, I'm pretty sure. Never having watched another version of the film, I can't say what scenes were removed.

That's probably PAL speedup. No scenes removed, they just play faster.

thanks for the info guys. I don't currently have a dvd burner, but I may need to invest in one sounds like. Man, I really hope that the movie is just sped up, I'm gonna be mad if they cut parts out of it.

I got a nice burner from Best Buy for 50 bucks. I've burned 100s of discs so far. Installing it in the computer wasn't much more difficult than swapping a Super Nintendo cartridge (albiet one with two screws and two wires.)

I don't recommend this version. The picture quality isn't bad, but I found myself extremely frustrated with the sound quality. At times, it was impossible to understand what was being said, and the rest of the time it was just simply very very hard. Is there a version with english captions floating around? Even with the very spotty sound, I still enjoyed the acting and story very much.

The spanish dvd does have english subs. But most of the time, they appear to be almost paraphrases of the dialogue not a word for word caption.
