First noted by someone on the Criterion forums, there is a listing on dvdfr.com for a DVD of CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, both as a standalone title and as part of five disc set with THE THIRD MAN and THE TRIAL, for release in France on October 3. Having heard what I've heard about the rights battle, I can't believe this is for real, but here is the link:

I wonder if this will have a better image than the Spanish Suevia Films dvd release which is good and alot better than the vhs tape? I hope Criterion can release it in the USA!!

Have any European folks picked up the French box set? Amazon France shows it in stock. At 50 euros, it's too expensive to upgrade just the one title, but I am very interested to know what it looks like.

Re. Region 2, etc: there are zillions of model-specific region-free hacks out there on the Web (www.videohelp.com is a good place), region-free players can be bought for under $50, plus, freeware like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter enables anyone to make region-free backup copies of pretty much any DVD. No one needs to have an issue with region coding...

I ordered it a week ago, does anyone know when I should expect it to come from amazon.fr?

The cash was deposited, which is good since the whole release looks a little suspicious. No individual release and no reviews or mentions of it anywhere...

Delivery from France can take up to a couple weeks, from prior experience. Someone on the Criterion board mentioned having received it, but didn't give any details beyond saying it looked better than the Spanish disc, which wouldn't be extremely difficult. No word of extras or anything else.

Hey guys- I got my box set today, it came quicker than I expected. The movie is 110 minutes long sped up by PAL of course. The film looks great so far although I have only checked out a bit, the sound is very good as well. The main problem is that the french subtitles appear to be unremovable... Is it worth it to burn without them or will it be so compressed that it becomes worse than the Spanish version?

The bonus features might be nice if you're French because all bonus stuff is in French w/o subtitles, there is a 28 minute making of doc that I haven't really looked at and a 22 minute interview/clip show with a Shakespeare buff. There is also a 4 minute trailer in French and a pretty complete filmography of Welles and Moreau.

The other disappointment is that the whole set is packaged in one 5 disc cardboard case. I was expecting 3 cases inside one large case.

So can anyone answer my question about burning Chimes and also Immortal Story?

depends if the subtitles are a feature, or if they are right on the image, either is possible. only way to find out is to reburn with subtitle feature unchecked, see what happens.

Well, there may be more bad news on the new Chimes front. The movie is in full screen format on my tv. The Trial also is in full screen and has non-removable subtitles. Does anyone know if the old Trial from Studio Canal was in widescreen and had removable subtitles? Also, it is of note that Chimes has the title card Falstaff with Chimes in parantheses and The Trial's title card says Le Proces.

Does anyone know what the correct aspect ratios ont these movies are?

Not sure, Dexy Man, but a quick google (admittedly the lazy man's way, but if it works, I'll use it!) is that "Trial" was done in 1.66:1 to accommodate the "hard-mattes" installed in the cameras; the Spanish "Chimes" shows a 1.37:100 "original aspect ratio" (if we can trust the Spanish DVD...!)
