In my previous post I think it may have been a little too vague, but I was alluding to Adair's asking Vargas to apologize on his knees for insulting that great cop who could do no wrong, Hank Quinlan.

Just read Rick's last post and I must admit it seems a little strange that he's no longer going to post here because the level isn't up to his "high" standards of discussion. While his insight will be missed, I can think of many posts I've read that have been inaccurate, silly or idiotic even, but who is going to be the arbitrator of taste to say "that's dosen't belong in this forum."

As long as it isn't offensive to someone personally, I can see no justification for censoring any posts. And that's something Orson Welles would no doubt believe in, too - even if he puts the words into the mouth of that gun-loving, right-wing actor, Mr. Charlton Heston.

Fanny raises the knife over her head and charges at george. George turns around and tries to hobble away, but fanny has no problem catching up to him.

jeff is right, this is a stale topic. none of that shit needed to be said. so i went back, erased all my comments, and so i would not leave holes in our thread, i replaced the negative posts with some ambersons fiction.

Jaime, I think you stated somewhere that the cut and uncut version of Touch Of Evil wasn't different, just rearranged. When I saw one of the movies, I remember seeing Orson strangling Akim Tamiroff. While in the other version, it just showed Janet waking up, all blurried vision, then seeing Akim dead and leaned over the bed.

Jeff, after reading the additions to your Japanese DVD review:

If the Japanese DVD is 1.51 on your TV and 1.81 in the computer capture, removing the overscan, wouldn't it be safe to say that the Cirterion LD may be wider if there were a way to do a computer capture of that image? It might be 1.66 after all, and your TV may have terrible overscan.

Another thing I noticed in your comparison is that it seems that Orson is thinner in your LD image than in the DVD image. This could account for some of the missing width. Just some thoughts.

I mentioned to you privately, but I thought I'd bring it up here, too, that a good side-by-side comparison would be the multi-colored film cans, three of which have Oja Kodar's name on them. You can't read the top and bottom cans on the Japanese DVD, but I'm sure the F for Fake I taped from TMC last year showed all three clearly. Trying to remember, as that tape now holds 6 straight hours of Teletubbies for my 2 yr old.

Although I forgot to check, it would seem that the Japanese disc might be anamorphic, if there is some stretching involved of the picture. That would explain why it's 1.81 instead of 1.66. If true, it would also mean the Japanese makers of the disc either did a phony anamorphic conversion, or actually paid to make a new anamorphic master. I tend toward the former. My TV does have a lot of overscan, but don't most regular TVs? Don't take my measurements on the TV ratio as gospel, though, as I could easily have mis-measured. Trying to measure a curved TV screen with a tape measure is inexact work. ???

At this point, I would tend to think the Criterion disc is framed correctly if not for overscan, and the Japanese DVD is anamorphically squeezing the 1.66 frame into a 1.81 ratio. They're both good buys, and hopefully we'll get a Criterion DVD to further develop the picture, so to speak.

F for Fake is rapidly becoming my favorite Welles film. Going on that equation in the Arkadin thread that Auteur + Subject = Film, F for Fake exposes more of the Auteur and less of the subject than Arkadin, which would make it the most pure Welles.

jeff, the comparison of screens you posted is very upseting. if those caps were paintings, the difference would be devestating.

the godfather discs are the same way. while viewing them through the capture card while pirating myself a copy, the screen is very wide. so do i enjoy it with stumpy sides, or do i render clips in the computer for 12 years so i can have a glorious sided version.

there seems to be no integrity in the cinema framing industry. they don't give a good crap. you'd think if they went to the trouble to give you the top and bottom, they should do the same for the sides.
