Aspect Ratio Again

Discuss Welles' classic Hollywood thrillers.

As we had discussed before, aspect ratio is rather vital to a film. My trip to see Citizen Kane at a local art house was a case in point. I was the only person there to see the screening, which was great, but then I noticed that the screen was a 'Scope screen. When the movie began, they screened it at about a 1.85:1 ratio, instead of the film's proper 1.37:1 Academy ratio. So about 25% of the picture was gone, including the actors' names during the end credits, rendering the sequence pointless, as it's meant to tell us who these people are! I complained, and scored a couple free passes out of it. Still a dumb thing to do, though...

That totally sucks. They get points for screening Kane, and then blow it by showing it as a Cinemascope feature. Once again, it is time to review Roger Ebert's article-Movies the Way God Meant Them to Be Seen.

watching DETOUR, i always thought that cheesey club tom neal works in has an odd name, THE REAK OF DAWN CLUB. saw DETOUR in 16mm and got the whole picture, it's called THE BREAK OF DAWN CLUB. then decided i like THE REAK OF DAWN CLUB better.

jeff:
i had same experience at art theater. i was the only one who cared to show up to most of the offerings at the SHAKESPEARE TO FILM FESTIVAL, i was there all week.

had jim carey been in any of the films it would have been a packed house. this is sad.

After several similar experiences, I always ask before going. I can't imagine how shite "Citizen Kane" must have looked with the top and bottom cut off...surely peoples heads must have been missing?

I wouldn't have stayed for the whole thing.

:( What happenins is some modern theaters do not has the proper 1:33 lens for there projectors. Remember gone are the days of union movie theater projectionests. Most of the time they are students or min. wage employes that have no idea even how to put the proper lens on They can't even do a changeover all they know is the platter. I have spent more times in proection rooms corecting focus then I can count. i can also tell you countless time of changeover problems done by proper experts, like the time they mixed the last two reel at the Turan Italy Fest with the subtitle on electronic boards presenting the diolog as if it was in order.

you have something against minimum wage workers? this country was built by minimum wage workers.

most of the people that work for me are minimum wage, and below minimum wage workers.

i myself am a below minimum wage worker, and look at my spelling.

You complain about aspect ratio's while the pro's have been let go. In the years of old those projectionists where delivering good screenings. No I don't compain about the min. wage but I' tell ya I would not want a doctor that was tha low on the pay scale digging inside me. The old pros did thier jobs for a living, now they are no more, fazed out. Who lost? You as I can see from the first question on this thread.
