Upcoming DVD Releases

Postby Sir Bygber Brown » Wed Dec 17, 2003 8:49 am

Australia finally got a DVD release of the restored Touch of Evil. No special features, only trailer, but the movie was a million times worth the price of entry - just saw it for the first time, and wow! One of my favourite Welles pictures. Absolutely incredible! Most definitely one of Welles' finest performances, and certainly one of his most taut, exciting movies.
You may remember me from such sites as imdb, amazon and criterionforum as Ben Cheshire.

Journey into Fear is being released in France on February 3. For any completists out there, there are also a couple of Region 2 releases next month including Citizen Kane and the Stranger.

Based on that link, it has the following extras:

Scene selection
Short film (?) something titled Ages of Earth (maybe Hearts of Age?)
Interview with Roberto Perpignani called "The Art of Assembly"
Comparison of English and Italian versions of the film

The Trial DVD is released recently in the UK but i haven't found any reviews of it.

Warner maybe used same transfer that Studio Canal used with french dvd release because in the UK DVD release there is Studio Canals logo in right bottom corner of front cover.

On the DVD front, I recently ordered Jane Eyre and Ambersons from China. They're sold on ebay for incredibly derisory prices (I forget exactly, but less than two bucks each). Still looking for F for Fake, though. Any opinions on which is the best version? And where I can order it, either with PayPal or Visa Electron in a language I find vaguely comprehensible?

The UK Trial is an excellent anamorphic print. The complete absence of extras sucks a bit, but since the film itself is the important factor, I was really pleased with it.

Though it isn't listed in their comparison links yet, there is a comparison of three versions of the Trial at dvdbeaver.com. Looking at them, hard to say which is the best. I buy R2 UK dvd's all the time, but in this case, I'm glad I bought The Trial in its French Release by Studio Canal. Not only is the picture better, but the French version also has plenty of extras, though you have to understand French to enjoy the documentary.

Some comparisons:

As for F for Fake, there's the French version available from Amazon.fr, there's the Japaneese version. Can't find it listed on amazon's japanese site but know it's there. Best one, depends. Criterion looks like they may soon release it on dvd and there's the new Italian one coming out soon. Check out,

I also have purchased from china "The Magnificent Ambersons"
for a low low price on dvd. It will be interesting to see how
good the picture will look and if it will have any extras! I
hope Warner Bros. releases the US version soon!! I also
have "F for Fake" but only on laserdisc and it's a good
print of the movie. At one time DVD BRAZIL had it for sale
in a all region ntsc dvd but now is no longer for sale.

Does anyone know where to get the UK Macbeth DVD? It seems that amazon.uk only has 4 sellers and none will ship internationally. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Try www.play.com Very reliable company, based on Jersey I think.
The have it for delivery within 24 hours.
I have never tried them for shipping to the US so I can't guarantee it will work, but but for the UK they work great.

For the benefit of my fellow North Americans hostages (i.e., stranded here with little or no access to some of OW's choicest works), rather than start a whole new thread, I thought I'd simply wedge the following into an existing one:

I happened upon the Turner Classic Movies video catalogue & shopping site earlier and found, to my surprise, quite the collection of (North American standard) Welles titles. Granted, some of it is still on VHS, but a growing segment seems to be finding its way to DVD, there, too.

As for VHS, they've got a number of works that I had previously believed were only available from overseas sources. Perhaps some relief is closer at hand than I had realized.

(For those of you who are already well aware of this source, I invite you to smile indulgently upon yours truly, who has taken this long to wend his way to this humble new level of enlightenment.) :)

I could attempt a short list, here, (The Trial - letterboxed with alternate openings, Chimes, F for Fake, The Dominici Affair, The Immortal Story, etc.) - but why not check it out for yourself

Hey All-
Did some checking today for those of us trapped in the U.S. - you can get both Macbeth and the Franco version of Quixote at:

To be clear, the "Turner Classic Movies video catalogue & shopping site" noted above refers to offerings that may or may not be available through "Movies Unlimited," a separate and distinct entity, unless I'm mistaken.

Flint - re xploited cinema, just so long as potential U.S. buyers realize that what's on offer there could well be in overseas formats, as opposed to NTSC Region 1.

And yes, PTC, you're right that Movies Unlimited seems to be behind the Turner Classic Movies shopping site. All the same, the titles thay offer as definitely North American in format. Previously, I had thought that no North American compatible DVDs or tapes existed for a number of those titles - including what just might be what has come to be referred to as the "Corinth Arkadin" (which is cheaper on the Movies Unlimited menu than what I paid Corinth to produce for me.).
