question on lost footage

Postby Coldspur » Tue Nov 11, 2003 7:42 pm

I was just curious why there is rarely talk about missing footage from Welles' films other than Ambersons. What about The Stranger, The Lady From Shanghai and Confidential Report? Has this footage been "destroyed" like the footage from Ambersons, or is the studio simply too lazy to search for this stuff?

Far from an expert on the subject, but Jeff mentions on the Stranger's film page here that the negatives of the missing footage has even gone missing and not likely to be found.

I think someone mentioned in a past thread that a similar fate befell the cut footage from Shanghai, but could be wrong.

People rarely talk about the missing footage from those pictures because they don't have the same place in cinema history as Ambersons, thus less of an interest. While one can never say never, it seems highly unlikely that any cut footage survives from either of the 40s films.
