The Boasting Thread - What's the rarest Welles item u seen?

Postby Sir Bygber Brown » Sat Oct 01, 2005 6:23 am

It can be TV appearances, acting appearances or anything else!

Just looking for recommendations of new rare things to search for and want to chat about the "less significant" entries in Welles's large filmography.

I just watched the beginning of A Safe Place (1971) which is pretty obscure and i'm pretty proud of myself!

Here is my rare boast: The rarest stuff I have seen is the silent LOVES OF S'ANNE footage that was used in the Unthinking Lobster stage production.
Back in the 1980s, a fellow whose name now escapes me sent me a VHS tape of incredibly rare Welles footage in perfect quality... the complete WoW press conference from 1938, the wine commercials, Welles at the 1950 Tour de France and some silent film of Welles filming what looked to be a religious film. A slate is briefly shown and it read, LOVES OF S'ANNE. It took me a l long time to realize what it was.
The fellow who gave this to me said he was working on an Orson Welles documentary. (This was a trade and I gave him some radio shows I had on tape). I never heard of a Welles documentary that featured these clips.

Wow, that's fair tantalising. I've heard of the wine commercial footage... I think Bogdanovich has a habit of showing that. As for Loves S'Anne... wow, thanks for that.

Does anyone collect all the specials Welles narrated? Docos and movies...? This was after all a major aspect of his talent...
