AMBERSONS, JOURNEY INTO FEAR on DVD next year

I dream of a "Welles Box Set" one day, containing the best possible prints of everything he directed, plus versions of TOSOTW, Don Quixote and the Deep. Every disc would have loads of extras, and there could be an extra few discs for his best tv work. A friend of mine said it's too bad Welles wasn't alive in the disc era, as he would have provided incredible commentaries; still, in a way, he predicted it, with his projected "Filming..." series.

Anyways, if Kubrick and Tarkovsky can have it, so can Welles. I figure it could comprise about 15 discs for the films, and maybe 5 discs for the tv work. All that needs to happen is to get the two weird sisters on the same page...

Tarkovsky is even less well-represented on DVD than Welles as of this writing, at least in Region 1 land.

One of the apparent benefits of Kubrick's obsession for detail seems to be that his work is on solid, clear-cut legal ground, allowing for box sets, etc. Considering the obstacles that have to be surmounted to get a single Welles film out on DVD, I would say a potential box set of his work would be impossible (unless you count the public domain releases).

Roger: I'm sure it will happen- maybe not in our lifetimes, but I'm sure it will happen!
