Orson Welles On Film... - Where to Buy Imports

Postby Shaunfon333 » Sun Dec 25, 2005 10:37 am

Okay, I've been talking about what great quality the overseas Welles' DVD films are and it's come to this.

I've decided to give away as a gift, my recently bought region 1 home theater (call it the Christmas spirit) to a fairly surprised family member,
and splurge on a nice, fat region free ( with PAL-Ntsc cconverter built in) home theater system (Which I have not bought as I type this). There are just too many great imports that I want, Welles and otherwise that I want to be able to play directly from my machine.

So all that to ask this. Can anyone recommend good sites to buy import (especially Welles' imports) DVD's like Studio Canal's The Trial, for example, other than the standard Amazon France/Germany etc.
Basically I'm thinking a US store that selles these imports.

Thanks to all.

You don't actually have to buy anything more than a region-free DVD player to play PAL discs (one that converts PAL , obviously). Any receiver and speaker system will work with any DVD player with the appropriate input jacks, which most players have. Buying some of those titles within the US might be difficult, as I don't recall any sites that carry them, but then I haven't looked at more than a couple. As for players, you can find players that convert PAL even at places like Best Buy, you just have to know which ones do it. Don't have time to post more, but you can check out threads at sites like DVD Talk, in their import forum, for more info about a range of players.

As far as the current status of Welles on dvd goes, amazon's international sites may be the easiest. The spanish Chimes is usually on ebay for about $15. The others (french Trial, italian Immortal, german Stranger) don't show up on ebay that often. DVD.it is the only place I know of that sells Immortal. Also check out dvdbeaver.com, the Roan Stranger is not that far behind the german disc in quality. And then, with the release of F for Fake this year and Arkadin early next year, I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion jumps in again with the Trial in the near future.

There are a couple places that deal in russian and asian import dvds. But don't know of any that deal in euro dvds. Do a google search, I'm sure there's at least one out there.
