What happened to Welles and Bogdanovich with respect to St. Jack and Nickelodeon?

Welles had originally wanted to direct St. Jack.

Welles was going to play the part eventually (over)played by Brian Keith in Nickelodeon but "things unfortunately didn't work out that way."

The stories of these are touched on in Bogdanovich's intro to the revised This Is OW. (If you don't have that, give a holler.) I don't know what the Welles bios say.

Just watched the DVD of SAINT JACK. In his commentary and interview, Bogdanovich only refers to the "idea" of having Orson direct it, but he doesn't go into details. He does say Orson turned him onto the book, and what an influence he was personally and through his films, but that's about it. As far as the film goes, PB has little reason for regret. It's one of his best.
