The Orson Welles Gallery - interpretations of the master

Welles' friends and family, business dealings, beliefs, etc.

Here's "Portrait with Symbols - Orson Welles" by the great photographer Irving Penn. ...I've never seen the portrait anywhere else. There are a couple of paragraphs about it in Peter Conrad's Welles book.

GM, the Penn photograph appeared originally in Vogue magazine, I believe. It's reproduced in the book "The Art and Technique of Color Photography", edited by Alexander Liberman and published by Simon & Schuster (1951).

It's a wonderful image, with Welles looking his matinee-idol best.

Thanks, Night Man. I'll have to see if I can track down that book at a library. I trust the reproduction there is bigger then in the Penn book.

Speaking of artwork BY Orson Welles, here's some kind of binding that he created for Fletcher Markle, husband of Mercedes McCambridge. I don't know much else about it, but it's interesting-

Just popping in for the first time in MONTHS... unfortunately, my mother passed away on May 27th and since then it's been much grief, practical stuff, house sale and, right now, an impending move. If I failed to respond to anyone's mails, my apologies -- I try not to do that normally. (One person from here had a go at me for sluggish correspondence, etc., while mom was dying, which was quite distressing.)

Anyway, while I have a few spare minutes and because I have some exciting (to me) Orson stuff to report, here I am. I commissioned the veteran artist, Gene Colan (who is now 80 and retiring shortly), to do me an Orson portrait some time ago, with a dedication to mom. Gene drew Tomb of Dracula and Howard the Duck in the 1970s, BTW.

Anyhow, he just posted a scan on his gallery, so I should be getting it any day now! Absolutely thrilled with it! Thought I would share it with the folks on here...

Oh, and I got the Arkadin boxset some time ago and it's great! A friend treated me to it while mom was ill and I was feeling very down. Beautiful package.

Later.

Chrissie: Glad to see you back.

I remember you told me of your mother's illness. I'm sorry to hear of her passing.

Thank you for sharing Mr. Colan's work with us. I'll alert some artist friends.

Solace.
