I live in L.A and am going on a Welles kick....anyone have any address info of the places he lived and worked/hung out? Would love to drive around and check them out.

I live down the street from Sony - the old MGM studios - and Culver Studios is next to it. Which was RKO at some point. Was KANE shot there?

You guys provide the addresses, I'll provide the photos!

Thanks,

Chip

One of the houses Welles lived in during the eighties was at 1717 North Stanley Avenue, Los Angeles.

It would be nice to see some pictures of it now... if it hasn't been torn down and rebuilt by a new owner! I'm not sure but it may be the house Oja Kodar can be seen in in THE ONE MAN BAND.

The Culver Studios was indeed the old R.K.O.-Pathe lot in the 30s and 40s. About half of "Kane" was shot there and virtually all of "Ambersons".

The backlot is long gone, but this site has got some interesting pictures and info:

Anyone have the address to the house he lived in when he died? What about famous hang outs? Is Ma Maison still operating? I can't find it.

Here's a weird sysnchronicity - my wife wrote a film in 1995, and in OMB Oja drives by a poster for it on the side of the Old MGM studios. Which now 12 years later we live right next to...pretty crazy....

If we can keep them coming and compile a bunch of addresses, I will go out and take some cool pics and post them!!

Thanks all,

Chip

Wasn't the "1717 North Stanley" address Todd provided the one Welles died at? I thought so.

Ma Maison closed sometime in the 90s if I remember correctly (I guess without Welles' patronage, they just couldn't make a go of it!).

Here are the pictures...funny anecdote...on the way to Welles' house, Ridley Scott made a left turn infront of me while I was stopped at the light at Sunset and Doheny. Too weird.

House looked a little worse for wear. As I continually couldn't get a good shot because of the overgrowth and the bars I kept hearing the Citizen Kane music in my head.....

Nice. Thanks for taking these.

Is this house where he died? I wonder what Raymond the butler would have heard him mutter with his dying gasp as he slumped over his typewriter.

Ironically, Paul Stewart, who played Raymond the butler, was one of the first of Welles friends to arrive at his home after his death, according to the McBride book.

Too ironic.

Was this also the house where he filmed The Dreamers and Filming Othello?

Chip:

Maybe Ridley Scott was visiting the Welles house for his planned sequel to RKO 281!

Anyway, thanks for providing the nice photos... From the pictures provided, I'd guess this is indeed the house where Welles shot THE DREAMERS in the garden. In The DREAMERS footage we of course see it only from the inside, as it's supposed to be a villa in Milan, but it looks very similar to the outside of this house, from the pictures you posted.

Here's some more of Orson addresses for you to visit, although I'm sure many are no longer of any significant interest, probably having been destroyed or replaced by much newer structures...

8545 Franklin Avenue - Orson lived at this address while shooting CITIZEN KANE.

427 North Canon Drive, Beverly Hills - Office of Mercury productions from 1944 to 1948 - probably now a shopping mall.

136 South Carmelina Drive, Brentwood - the 10 room house that Rita and Orson lived in after getting married.

1451 Cahuenga Blvd. (off of Sunset) - site of the Hollywood Canteen where Orson sawed Rita and then Marlene in half during WW II - now probably a condo.

Todd,

Thanks for the addresses. I will take some more pix on my next outing!

Glad you like the pix I took of the house. It is definitely the one from One Man Band and has to be the same house from those clips of Dreamers. I don't know anything about Filming Othello - so I can't say on that.

Anyone else want to pile on with address/picture requests? My wife and I love driving around LA and seeing what we can find. (She's a Marilyn Monroe nut - and we found the spot where she got her hair dyed blond first. ) It will be interesting to see what is still standing in all the addys Todd has given...

Best,

Chip

Chip - here's one closer to home for you: 119 W. Adams in Culver City. I believe the home at this address was used for the boarding house exterior in the original ending of "The Magnificent Ambersons". There's also a possibility the same residence was used as the "mystery house" in "Curse Of The Cat People" a couple of years later.

Guys,

Sorry no pictures as of yet. The wife's car is on it's last legs, so we had to buy a new car. My first experience in such an adventure. So far from being our regular romp around the southland, this past weekend was spent going from lot to lot, playing them off of each other, then getting the car for 1500 under list. Viola, the wife get a Yaris S Sedan. 40 MPGs on the highway. And since she will be teaching all over creation this semester...it's good stuff.

That said - is the Pomona theater where they previewed Magnificent Ambersons still around? I'll add that to the list!
