Yet no more news about Region 1 DVDs of Ambersons, Chimes, Macbeth, Othello, or The Immortal Story. When are we going to hear something?

When there's enough demand for them.

"Ambersons, Chimes, Macbeth, Othello, or The Immortal Story"

Ambersons and Macbeth you would think would have some kind of market, but Immortal Story will probably never come out in NA: too esoteric. As for Othello, it's out: and until Beatrice dies, that'll be the official version and the only version. And she's only 49, so don't hold your breath.

Othello is out of print. The Immortal Story should be a Criterion release. Neither Mr. Arkadin nor F for Fake were in huge demand, yet they both got proper releases.

The one that really gets me is Chimes at Midnight -- this is considered by many to be Welles's masterpiece, and it's unavailable.

Chimes has been the ongoing subject of legal squabbling over the rights; it will never be released until that gets settled. It's ridiculous, but that's how it is. Beatrice Welles could presumably re-release Othello if anyone was willing to do so, but she may have no interest in doing so.

I can't understand why she doesn't re-release her version as the 1992 "Restored" version, along one of her father's original versions as the "Director's original vision" (or something like that), along with "Filming Othello": she'd sell every copy.

Of course, since Oja owns "Filming Othello" (except for the bits of Othello in it) this would entail Oja and Beatrice working together for the good of Welles's art, and we know the likelihood of that happening.
