Adam Resurrected is based on Israeli author Yoram Kaniuk's 1968 novel, according to F.X. Feeney's review in The Village Voice. Charles Chaplin was 79 years old in 1968, so the unpleasant experience of A Countess from Hong Kong (1967) was still fresh in his mind. That unfunny comedy (starring Marlon Brando, Sophia Loren, Tippi Hedren and Margaret Rutherford) garnered Chaplin the worst reviews of his career. Perhaps the elderly director now saw an opportunity with Adam Resurrected to redeem himself, to produce one final masterpiece. Sort of a Jake Hannaford maneuver.
Sounds like a great film... about a former comedian victimized by the Holocaust, trying to recover from his trauma at a clinic in Israel in 1961. Directed by Paul Schrader. Jeff Goldblum delivers his best performance since The Fly. Derek Jacobi co-stars...
