So Kate Bush is back with her first new single in 12 years... with a song about Elvis... and Citizen Kane!!!

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN
(Kate Bush)

Could you see the aisles of women?
Could you see them screaming and weeping?
Could you see the storm rising?
Could you see the guy who was driving?
Could you climb higher and higher?
Could you climb right over the top?
Why does a multi-millionaire
Fill up his home with priceless junk?

The wind is whistling
The wind is whistling
Through the house

Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain

Another Hollywood waitress
Is telling us she’s having your baby
And there’s a rumour that you’re on ice
And you will rise again someday
And that there’s a photograph
Where you’re dancing on your grave

The wind is whistling
The wind is whistling
Through the house

Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain

The wind it blows
The wind it blows the door closed

Partially Welles-inspired? Considerably so, I would say. Remarkable imagery and some wonderfully playful visual conceits. Not bad. Not bad at all. Like Elvis, Our Man lives on to inspire yet another generation of artists. Bubba Welles. Just for the fun I could be down with that.

I'll have to check out Kate's vid.

And thanks, I've been wondering on which post to mention the Kane reference in the Jon and Vangelis song The Friends of Mr Cairo and the War of the Worlds reference in Queen's Radio Ga Ga.

Speaking of Welles' presence in popular music culture, don't forget The White Stripes' song "The Union Forever"; the entire lyric comes from various passages in the "Citizen Kane" script. I suspect Jack White is quite an admirer of Welles since his albums are issued through his own "Third Man Records" label.

'The Union Forever' is a good song, and Jack White is really a pretty awesome rock talent. The girl drummer is barely competent, though.

Thanks for the Jon and Vangelis tip, Hadji. I've been a moderate fan of both for a long time.

If this is the official 'Orson Welles in pop music' thread, I might as well stretch things a bit and mention Duke Ellington's 'Hearsay (Orson Welles)', a dark, brooding late-40's jazz piece possibly inspired by the Isaac Woodard case.

Cool :blues: - he's fighting the good fight

P.S. - They played that doorbell song again on the radio - I actually got the lyrics wrong - d'oh! it goes : I've been thinking about my doorbell, when ya gonna ring, when ya gonna ring it - oh well

PPS - What should the stylish Welles fan wear at a White Stripes concert?
