in response to Tony's post about F IS FOR PHONY, edited by Alexandra Juhasz and Jesse Lerner, the cover photograph was given to me by the late Brazilian filmmaker Rogerio Sganzerla; when asked to submit a chapter on F FOR FAKE, I had included it in my image selections for my essay; the image shows Welles on the set of TOUCH OF EVIL, off-camera, as both actor and director; without my knowledge, it was chosen for the cover of the Juhasz/Lerner book (which explores fake documentary in general) at the insistence of University of Minnesota Press -- in other words, a big publicity move, but one that placed the image quite a bit "out of context." Obviously, the images we choose to show of Welles contribute to popular interpretations of his persona, so I personally would have avoided that choice.
