Trying to decide if The Trial and Chimes are worth the ~92USD it would cost to import from there, especially since I've never seen Chimes...

Hi,

I'm a new member of this forum. I think it's a good way to start off by providing you with some screenshots from the Studio Canal release of Chimes at Midnight, which obviously looks superior to the Suevia disc.

Wow, great - still waiting on my order from Proxis, but looks like I won't be disappointed. Thanks for posting those.

Nice screen grabs - there's a very similar shot to the 6th picture in Alexander Nevsky, by the way.

This scene was posted on youtube - I am assuming it is from the Studio Canal DVD because the quality seems pretty good.

Youtube obviously does not have the greatest quality video (the clip of course is heavily compressed), but this scene seems to suggest a pretty good source.

Hmm, well Proxis said they couldn't get anymore from their supplier, and the supplier had no definite date on when/if they could get any more. Anyone know of another place/how to get the collection (well, only interested in Chimes and The Trial)?

You're a bit late, IvyMike. I bought the boxed set from Proxis two years ago, when it was already practically impossible to find. Your only chance now is the second-hand market. Or pray they resolve the rights issue on Chimes.

The Studio Canal two-disc edition of The Trial should still be relatively easy to find, if you shop around. Good luck.

It is in all likelihood a bootleg. And until the squabbling rights holders pull their heads out and settle this, pirate outfits like this will continue to take their money. Which probably serves them right, in some way.

I've run a VHS copy in my class last Thursday. It is watchable (not "fair" - as in my DVD version with Japanese subtitles - but it is no match for the beautiful images that have been posted on this site.

Thanks, tonyw. And I'm guessing the DVD version wouldn't be appreciably better. As for the Studio Canal version: I second you there. The beauty of some of those screen shots takes your breath away.

WOW! And the DVD really REALLY looks like that?!?! I recently broke down and ordered the Brazilian DVD which suffers seriously by comparison. Still, what I just got is leagues ahead of the VHS I acquired back in the early '90s. That thing looked and sounded like you were watching the film through a waterfall.

In case they read this message board, any time the parties concerned wanna get their act together, settle their differences, and put out a lovely Criterionesque version of "Chimes at Midnight" it'd be just fine with me. :D

I ordered it yesterday. If you sign up for e-mail updates on the homepage www.hollywoodsattic.com they will send you an e-mail containing a log on word (preferred) and password (customer) to get a discount. Chimes normally sells for $19.95 and the discount price is $12.00.
Here is what a person who bought it through Amazon said:
"Hey! What's happened here? I purchased this modestly priced DVD to tide me over, having become increasingly frustrated at waiting for a restored version of this masterpiece to appear. Certainly, this print presents the movie at the best I have ever seen it. The print is of excellent quality, the sound clear and devoid of hiss. The notorious post synch problems have been almost eliminated. What's going on? Whatever, I am most grateful for the work done. Can anyone supply me with more information about who has undertaken this work. Bravo!"

Seems like it's worth a shot. I'll submit a review after I recieve it.
