Welles' friends and family, business dealings, beliefs, etc.

According to the LA TIMES, here are the locations in Venice, CA that might provide for some interesting comparisons photos.

The Classic one take opening shot of TOUCH OF EVIL that follows Vargas and Susan, takes place as they walk down Speedway Ave to Windward Ave and Ocean Front Walk.

The Hotel where Vargas and Susan are staying in Mexico is now called the Venice Beach Hotel.

Here's an update. Just got a new one - a friend told me that 136 S Centinela is a cottage where Orson lived with Rita.

8545 Franklin Avenue - Orson lived at this address while shooting CITIZEN KANE.

GONE

ToddBaesen wrote:136 South Carmelina Drive, Brentwood - the 10 room house that Rita and Orson lived in after getting married.

GONE

Still need to check on:

427 North Canon Drive, Beverly Hills - Office of Mercury productions from 1944 to 1948 - probably now a shopping mall.
1451 Cahuenga Blvd. (off of Sunset) - site of the Hollywood Canteen where Orson sawed Rita and then Marlene in half during WW II - now probably a condo.

Roger Ryan wrote:Chip - here's one closer to home for you: 119 W. Adams in Culver City. .

Sad those first one's are gone. 136 S. Carmelina doesn't even exist as an addy any more. The McMansion there eat up 134 and 136.

Sorry this has taken so long.

Looks like Rita is a neighbor...

Rita Hayworth is buried down the street from where I live. I really believe she was one of the best actresses of her day. She's great in Gilda and of course Lady from Shanghai

Here is a photo:

Chip,

Thanks for posting the photo of Rita Hayworth's tombstone. Could you please post the cemetary where she is buried?

Also, the address Todd Baesen gave you for the Hollywood Canteen -- 1451 Cahuenga Blvd. -- was the site of the Mercury Wonder Show that Welles produced for the troops during World War II. A circus tent was pitched here, and a number of Mercury players were enlisted to entertain the soldiers, led by the master magician himself.

Holy Cross in Culver City...the entrance is off Overland a bit south of Jefferson. She is buried in the old grotto.

EDIT: " Grotto, Lot 196, Grave 6 (right of main sidewalk, near the curb)." - from Wikipedia.

BTW - I think the Cahuenga address is a parking lot. I need to finish off the addresses. I just noticed this thread has about 3,000 views which is a little freaky.

Chip:

Since most of the old Welles haunts are gone, maybe you can visit the locations in Venice that are still around from TOUCH OF EVIL and take some shots of them when you get a chance, possibly at sunset or nighttime for best effect.

I saw the arcade with the arches on Windward Ave. in downtown Venice when I was in LA last year, and apparently the opening shot follows Vargas and Susan as they walk down Speedway Ave towards Windward and Ocean Front Walk.
