Amazon's uk site says it was released a year ago. Apparently it's a british release of the criterion print. Nice to see the color trailer available. So far as I know, it's only been released on an italian dvd previously. of course, would like to see it; for some reason didn't work for me.

If that was finger-painting done on the computer, my gods it looks good.

Perhaps Ted Turner could bring back colorization, as now it could be done properly.

The colour trailer appears on the U.K. Masters of Cinema DVD as a hidden easter egg. To view the trailer, follow these steps:

1. Choose Commentary from the Main Menu
2. From the Commentary screen, press Right Arrow to highlight Main Menu
3. Press Up Arrow Twice. A ? symbol will appear in the lower right-hand corner
4. Press Select

The main film transfer was licensed from Criterion, and is identical.

The trailer is definitely the gem of this release. As for the other extras, the commentary is nice, but inferior to the Criterion IMHO. The Rosenbaum piece is spoken straight to camera in what appears to be a hotel room; a bit amateurish, really. MoC always produce lovely booklets, and this is no exception. All in all, a worthy purchase.

How on Earth did this one slip by you all?

The color Fake trailer is definitely much more enjoyable then the workprint version. A very welcome addition to the Welles canon.

Tony, this is the same 52-minute documentary that appears as an extra on disc two of the Criterion F for Fake.

Btw, thanks to the WellesNet gods for putting the MoC DVD front-and-centre on the News page, where it belongs (albeit over a year since it was actually news). This is a strange forum at times. I gave up reporting new DVD finds ages ago because no one seemed to care very much. And now this. Glad to be of help one time, I suppose

I find myself wondering how many people were able to discover that Easter egg on their own. That seems a pretty important item to be relegated to "Easter egg" status.

Following up on Store Hadji's question, does anyone know exactly how it was colorized? I had always heard that the color footage for the Fake trailer was lost or destroyed. Incidentally Store, Ray Harryhausen has already been bringing back colorization with some of his old black and white monster movies from the 1950's, and the results are more impressive then the old TCM atrocities.

The F FOR FAKE trailer was not colorized at all, but digitally restored by the Munich Film Archive using a new print of F FOR FAKE. The black and white work print trailer is what Gary Graver had kept for years after the distributor supposedly didn't want to make copies of the trailer. It's also the version Criterion used on their DVD. It's badly scratched, has blotches and poor image quality. In short, compared to the pristine new version, it seems nearly unwatchable. What's also very important, is seeing Gary's color cinematography (Oja and a Bengal Tiger look gorgeous in full Eastmancolor), contrasted with the black and white material. The contrast of the two, along with the quick editing seems to give us a glimpse of the effect Welles intended for THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND. And I agree completely that Eureka made a big mistake in not promoting the newly restored trailer on their DVD. It's much too important a piece of Welles work to be relegated to Easter Egg status! Plus, I believe it's an exclusive to the Eureka DVD. If they wanted to include an Easter Egg, they should have used the trailer for Oja's film, JADED.

I thought I heard somewhere they got the colour for the parts from the film from the film, and colourized the rest, as there was no original colour negative for the new bits.

Thanks for the link. Gotta say, as this is personally my least favorite Welles film that the trailer looks terrific. Enjoy it more than I did the movie. And a real shame on Criterion of all companies not getting the rights to this one. Definitely would have improved the FFF disc.
