Interesting bit from a 5/18/08 San Francisco Chronicle interview with George A. Romero ("Night of the Living Dead.")
Q: "Living Dead" has become a cult classic with a huge afterlife on DVD. What do you think it is that makes people watch it again and again?
A: I think some of the imagery and the way it is presented has a visceral effect. But I can't take credit for it because it was all stolen. I was ripping off angles and shots and lighting and dark shadows from Orson Welles. I was basically being a parasite, trying to make a bit of an arty film. I put a little bit of humor in some of the images. I'd studied painting and design. I shot the film myself, so I was going for images that I thought would be lasting.
