Is this a keeper? Unless I'm mistaken, it sounds like this is the only opportunity, short of a screening with Gary Graver or a tape of One Man Band, to see clips from The Other Side of the Wind.

There are also clips from OSotW in Gary Graver's Working With Orson Welles documentary.

So, one should just go with WWOW then?

I see that one's available on Amazon, whereas the AFI disc looks to be harder to find.

It's been ages since I've seen the AFI thing, but I believe the Graver docu has some footage the AFI doesn't, namely that of a more sexual nature. The AFI thing is worth seeing, but not laying out much money for. Welles' speech at the end, extolling the virtues of the independent filmmaker, is particularly touching, viewing it with the knowledge that these same Hollywood people honoring him would subsequently refuse to help him finish the film. The Graver docu is no great shakes either, as it is weirdly constructed and filled with some less than stellar material.

Jeff, I think you're referring to One Man Band. I don't think there is any OSOTW footage on Working with Orson Welles.

One Man Band has two segments from the film:
The Press Party
The Car Sex Scene

The AFI Tribute has two segments:
The Press Party (Extended beyond where OMB ends)
Watching the Rushes (In my mind, the most important segment; this one is absolutely breathtaking)

I'll have to check my WWOW dvd again, but I'm sure there isn't anything significant from TOSOTW on it. It's got the Jaded trailer though. :)

Yeah, you're right. I haven't watched the Graver film in a long while either. It has a lot about OSotW, though. And yes, the Jaded trailer, which looks like an oddball film to be sure. Very strange to see Merchant of Venice footage in what looks like an exploitation movie.

Yes, you are correct. There are many stories about TOSOTW from those who participated in it. No clips, sadly. The best stuff is from Peter Jason, who is a fine storyteller and does a great Orson impression. He also plays a zombie in Caprenter's Prince of Darkness, so there's that bonus. :)

Wow, I just practically beat up an old lady to win this eBay auction. I probably overpaid, but what the hell, I wanted the damn thing.

Woo-hoo!

..............

you are absolutely right. why lie. it's a great show, i know you will enjoy it. heston, bogdanovich, george stevens jr were the most eloquent speakers on welles, especially george stevens jr. sinatra was a bit confused, he thought he was at a friars roast with fat jokes, but otherwisevery enjoyable. and you get the OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND clips. you can't go wrong.

............

gravers documentary, WORKING WITH WELLES, is also excellent. i've enjoyed it many times. has lots of stories, and pictures from the making of TOSOTW.

if you put the 3 items together, ONE MAN BAND, AFI, THE GRAVER docu, you will have all the clips available on TOSOTW, and bunches of behind the scene stories, and stills of the filming.

i have a laser disc of the graver docu i'll sell you for $89
