It's nice to see it being played in theaters but for the movie not to be on a region 1 dvd is very bad indeed. ALso there was some rumors that The Weinstein Company might release it on dvd but on the website The Digital Bits it says: "On a similar Rumor Mill note, we hear that The Weinstein Company is in a great deal of financial difficulty"....so we might have to wait a little longer...

Onetimechimes: Sounds as if Beatrice Welles may be expanding her active interests into specific areas of the Arts that her father was involved in, and which she approves of; in this case, Shakesperian production. The DAX Foundation is looking for worthy such groups to endow. We should encourage her. Who knows? THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND may be next!

As for the Weinstein Brothers, they are always 'in a great deal of financial difficulty,' but they have often bounced back -- perhaps, this time, with CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT/FALSTAFF in their teeth.

Meanwhile, I'm off to the Ha-Ra Club to find Todd Baesen, our diplomatic envoy in such matters, so he may plan his approach to the DAX Foundation in order to have Wellesnet receive a grant.

For those new to the Dax Foundation/ Orson Welles connection, this 2008 bit from the Guardian News & Media about Welles' Oscar being placed on the auction block by Dax:

""We've had a tremendous amount of interest from very high-profile individuals who have said that they would like to see this on their mantel or back in the Academy's hands," Dave Weisman, executive director of the Dax Foundation, which owns the statuette, said.

After (Welles') death in 1985, his daughter, Beatrice, obtained a replacement from the Academy. But in 1994 the original surfaced at an auction at Sotheby's, which is handling this week's sale. The statuette had been in the possession of Welles's cinematographer, Gary Graver, who said the director had given it to him as a gift.

Welles's daughter sued to stop the sale and gain ownership of the statuette, pledging that it would feature in a permanent memorial to her father. Instead she sold the statuette three years later, fending off a lawsuit from the Academy seeking to block the sale. The statuette was bought in 2003 by the Dax Foundation."

Chimes at Midnight (aka Falstaff) has been released on DVD in UK, exclusively sold in HMV for now. Apparently company or label Paladium is behind the release. Since I haven't found any reviews or comments from forums I frequent, I ordered it. Low budget-price doesn't promise a lot (only 5.99 gbp, SRP 9.99 gbp), but french release which was pulled off the shelves pretty quickly was a very good transfer so there's a hope that they're using the same masters/transfers.

When I get the disc, I will report the quality with screenshots.

I was just reading a quote from Peter Bogdanovich, who said the estate of Harry Saltzman wanted to charge Showtime $35.000 for using a one minute excerpt from FALSTAFF when Bogdanovich edited his version of THE ONE MAN BAND. So if this UK edition of FALSTAFF is not actually authorized by the Saltzman estate, which given it's price, I'm sure it isn't, I'm sure it will be stopped in it's tracks as soon as they find out about it.

The bottom line: Order it now, before it's too late and it's pulled from the shelves by legal action!

Unfortunately Palladium's/HMV's Chimes at Midnight is the same as Spanish DVD is, don't waste your money to this sad excuse of the DVD.

Amazon.UK will release the dvd on Feburary 28th by Cornerstone Media. The dvd cover shown on Amazon is the same one shown here so i guess this is the release reported by Jarpie back in November. I hope this is not the same Spanish release...will wait for DVD BEAVER to review it before i buy it and you can see the link to it on it's new updates to calendar page.
