Now I saw THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO and Alan Badel's performance would evoke a debonair version of those Welles "larger than life" figures. The now lost HEREWARD THE WAKE was also superb but the Jeremy Brett THREE MUSKETEERS has survived. Hopefully, OUR MUTUAL FRIEND with Jane Seymour, John McEnery, and Warren Clarke.

The UNCLE SILAS program with Peter O'Toole (called THE DARK ANGEL) sounds interesting as well, since Welles tried unsuccessfully to make a film of LeFanu's other classic story, CARMILLA. I'm not sure when that was, exactly.

I did see that TV production. O'Toole was unfortunately over-the-top as he was for his theatrical MACBETH which sold out in the UK because people wanted to see if he was as bad as the reviews stated. The best version on TV feaured Robert Eddison during the 1960s in the role and he was much more believable and sinister.
