What's Beatrice up to now?
The article says she's the benefactor of something called, "The Orson Welles Institute."
What's that?

The article says it's to be some kind of home for study of Welles. This is apparently something that's been in the works, as a 1999 Welles-themed issue of Nickleodeon, a Spanish film magazine, has a 4 page article by Beatrice Welles titled "A Project: Orson Welles Institute". So who knows? I'm leery of anything with an "official" stamp (will this institute recognize the unfinished films, for example, if they don't legally possess them?), but if anything comes of it, we'll see.

So I guess I was wrong when I said that Beatrice probably wouldn't have any new Welles-related projects to announce. This sounds very promising. I've long felt that Orson Welles deserved some kind of museum or arthouse theatre named after him, and it looks like it might finally happen - in some form, anyway. But where will it be?

Thanks for the link, fantomas. BTW, I finally got an english translation of the program for the Mannheim Welles fest, so I was able to see more clearly what all went on. What an amazing lineup of programs! Sounds like there were quite a few fascinating lectures there, including the one by Jonathon Rosenbaum on Welles' view of America. Also, it sounds as if those six half-hour shorts by Welles (VIENNA, LONDON, MAGIC SHOW, MOBY DICK, SPIRIT OF LINDBURGH, and GOLDEN HONEYMOON) are being released together as one big program to cinemas around Germany. If true, I hope that makes it over here in the states too!

If it doesn't, then bootlegs will, ala One Man Band and Don Quijote. Another copyright question - does Aint Bea's clutching grasp reach overseas or is it limited to Region 1 releases? Maybe the Chinese market would be a good place for Oja and Gary to conduct their business.

I'm sure we would all much prefer that they get a legitimate release on video over here, which would undoubtedly be of much higher quality then bootlegs. But I know I've got my money ready for the bootlegs too if that's the only way to get 'em.
