And while it's a touch last minute, Turner Classic Movies is running a number of Welles' films tonight, beginning with Touch of Evil at 8 EST, followed by The Stranger, Kane, Ambersons, and The Trial. Not that most of us don't already own copies of these, but I thought it worth mentioning.

....................

funny, i just saw the same thing and was coming here to post it.

while most people here have kane, and ambersons, the tcm stranger looks great, so does the copy of the trial tcm showed last time. also if it's the restored touch of evil but not lbxed, that could be a good addition to the collection. only encore has showed it like that so far.

turner's copy of kane sucks. i wonder if they've gotten something better than the burned out copy they showed last time.

what perfect timing for you two.

actually, this is an orson welles month. but not just on tcm. if you want to know the schedule, go here:

My Webpage

there are movies playing this month that i have not seen yet.

now that i finally have the channels that they come on, i can see them, record them, burn them, etc.

if those who have a cut copy of the stranger, record it from the channel it's coming on.

there's also the muppet movie. missed out on it. came on nov. 25. boohoo.
oh please. i'm not gonna record that whole dang movie to see a less than 5 minute, or less, part played by orson. i'll put it on my orson short's tapes. along with the end of someone to love.

anyone ever seen the last sailors? orson narrates it.

bye now!

I watched 'Touch of Evil' and 'The Stranger' and thought the prints TCM used were crisp and clear...I have DirecTV so that helped somewhat. Went to bed during 'Kane' but woke up in the middle of 'Ambersons'. I thought the print of 'Ambersons' was also excellent. Faded in and out of sleep during it and kept having disconnected dreams involving 'Ambersons' and my own odd dream reconstruction of the lost scenes. Made it through the first half-hour or so of 'The Trial' and then checked out.

thanks for the tip!

yeap, the print of TOUCH OF EVIL they showed, though it had that crummy lbx-ing, had a better look than the dvd. the dvd version has this sort of milky quality to it.

the stranger looked great.

i was falling in and out of sleep and had this awfull dream about the major and lucy that i won't discuss till i'm emotionally prepared.

Well, I watched The Stranger for the first time in a long time. I liked it more this time, though it is still a hopeless potboiler. I loved the noir lighting at night, and the Shadow of a Doubt quality of a perfect little town and the sense of menace that "just doesn't happen here" until it does.

It's an interesting blend of Welles and traditional Hollywood. But I am glad it was not too successful. I would rather have the ragged though brilliant independent films Welles later made over The Stranger any day.

Started getting sleepy during The Trial, and watched Kane through the beginning of the Thatcher scene, and decided I'd better quit before I ended up watching Kane for the 1001th time...
