i have an article from april 1992, to put michael jackson on the building. but others would've rather had orson welles put. does anyone know if either one got put? and if so, did they make the right choice?

bye now!

ps. and if it wasnt orson between the two, was a wrong choice. to me anyway.

From what I was able to find out, the city council in Hollywood, where the El Capitan Theatre is located, ultimately gave approval to an enormous mural of Michael Jackson. It was planned to be put on the east side of the theater, but I don’t know if the project was ever completed. There’s nothing on the theater’s web site about a huge mural of Michael Jackson on the exterior of the building. When the mural was originally proposed back in 1992, a group of people objected and wanted a mural of Orson Welles instead, with over 1,000 people signing a petition favoring Welles over Michael Jackson. They claimed that CITIZEN KANE was the first movie shown at the theater, and therefore a mural of Welles would be a better choice since Jackson had no connection with the theater. The city council rejected the petition thinking a mural of Jackson would be better at luring tourists and money, but again I suspect the whole project was scuttled anyway. Incidentally, according to the theater’s web site, CITIZEN KANE “premiered” at the theater, but I always thought it premiered at a theater in New York City.

as morrison said, people are strange. imagine thinking that a mural of michael jackson will lure tourists, and money to the town. i can see the hoards now, like okies in the dust bowl, making the trek to the new mecca; the michael jackson mural.

just goes to show you what little respect welles gets. the average joe knows of the martian broadcast, and about the paul masson commercials.

i thought it premiered in san francisco, where welles claims he ran into hearst in the elevator.

::::::::::::::::

yes, the john wayne mural is on the side of THE SPORTSMAN 24-HOUR DINER, in homestead, florida. some years back, after a night of drinking, i went there for breakfast, and on the way out, i almost got beat-up by 2 toothless rednecks. they called me a dirty reb. i think i was empowered in the presence of the mural, and defeated both my opponents.

in venice beach, CA, on the side of a tall building, there is a mural of lou reed, instead of hank quinlan. can you beat that?
