Locarno Film Festival Welles Retrospective

Since this has all been published on the festival's web site, I'll post it here as well. Running from August 3-13, the Locarno Film Festival will be hosting a retrospective covering Welles' entire career, with screenings of pretty much everything Welles made, lectures covering a wide range of topics, and screenings of films starring and about Welles. The lectures cover:

That's an amazing lineup; I wish I could go. But wasn't the Locarno festival originally going to be showing the new "Chimes at Midnight" restoration as well? I wonder what happened to that?

Restoration aside, all of Welles' finished films are on the screening schedule. Below is the link to the festival press release page (the release is in pdf format) which has the Welles info beginning on page 43, where one can view the schedule in full. I left the Welles-directed films and acting only films off the list above.

I'd be interested in more information.
Is there a consise place that lists costs, etc.

The intro to the Welles material in the press release mentions that this sort of retrospective is aimed at being held every three years (which they have done so far), so this hopefully won't be the last time it happens. As for getting there and so on, the festival web site mentions some of that information.

I was wondering if it would be possible, if anyone is going to go, for there to be audio recordings of the different workshops and then them being put up for download as podcasts? I have no idea who to ask about this but thought throwing it out there would be a great start.

TheMuGuffin, the person to ask would be Stefan Drossler, the Director of the Munich Filmmuseum, who is running the Orson Welles retrospective at the Locarno festival. It is quite possible that Stefan has already made plans to tape the workshops, which would be a very good idea. Thank you for your suggestion, and I will pass it along.

I don't have a problem with posting my own lecture, but anyone else would probably have to give permission, which might involve getting signed releases or similar for everyone's safety, and that could be a hassle. Also, lectures with extensive video material might not make a whole lot of sense without them, but I could be wrong.

I've prepared a structural analysis of "Ambersons" which may or may not be part of my presentation. I will be happy to post it here after the event if desired.

Hi Jeff,

I noticed that you are lecturing at Locarno and I try to get there for couple of days, too ,if I can arrange it.

Do you have more specific schedule of these workshops? Dates and starting times?I contacted festival office, but they haven’t answered.

Or does the DAILY mean that workshops go on everyday? Does the 11:15 mean the start time?

I might be able to be there only couple of days, so I’d like to know especially when “THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND-workshop” is.

Sorry Vidamonte, it was a bit unclear, what I posted. 11:15 is the start time each morning for the panels, and there is one each day beginning 4 August. If you have a PDF reader on your computer, check out the festival site linked above and view the press release, as it has a complete time table of all the Welles screenings/lectures. The lists I posted above are in their running order at the festival, beginning 4 August, as I said. So the first day, with my radio lecture, also has the Dublin and London TV/short films block. The OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND lecture is towards the end, the 10th maybe?

Wilson and anyone else going to Switzerland (!):

If Stefan Drossler, or others involved in the organization of the event, have NOT made plans to videotape the lectures, someone who is going should just set up a videocam on a tripod and get these sessions taped. Personally, I'd be willing to shell out some cash for a copy.

And, after the event, if anyone has any information on video documentation--either through the organizers or a bootleg recording--please post it.

Vidamonte, According to the last schedule I received, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND workshop is scheduled for Thursday, August 11, beginning at 11:15 a.m. However, the schedule may have changed so it is a good idea to check the Festival web site closer to the time.
