Locarno Film Festival Welles Retrospective

Archives, Classes, Award Ceremonies, Festivals, etc.

Hi to the Forum. I will be in Locarno participating in the workshop of DON QUJIOTE. I will even present the new edition of NELLA TERRA DI DON CHISCIOTTE made for RAI, and a work that I made in the early nineties about MR ARKADIN. I do not have any problem (agreeing with the other people of the Forum involved in the Festival) to be taped or something. It is possible that some problems could exist for images.
and please forgive my english.

For some reason, I'm not able to access the 40+-page program when I go to the Locarno Press Release page -- there's no .pdf document referenced, and when I click on "Program", I get:

The Online Program will be available from the beginning of August. [B]

Could someone post the entire Welles schedule?

Thanks.

Thank you Jeff and Christopher.
I saw the schedule and unfortunately I can't be there 10-13th of August, because my school begins on 10th. So I'm going to miss "The Other Side Of The wind" workshop...but I'm gonna be there 6-9.8 and I am going to Don Quijote and Mr.Arkadin and maybe "The Deep"( if I don't have to catch my plane)workshops. Does anyone know are those free and can I or must I reserve seat for those?
And andrej, maybe I see you there. When is the screening of your thing?

Vidamonte, I will be in Locarno from 6th to 10th August. As told, I will present a study that I worked at in 1989-1990 about the existing versions of Mr Arkadin. At that time it could have been of some interest, but at the moment I recommend to follow the work that Stefan Drossler is doing about the film. (It will be presented there on August 8th at 11.15 am.)
At the same time I think that can be considered a resource for all wellesians the new edition of NELLA TERRA DI DON CHISCIOTTE (1961). Orson directed for RAI 9 episods and he offered himself for the commentary with his own voice. But in RAI someone told that his italian had a bad american accent (!). So Orson finished the edition, and consigned to RAI nine reels of 16mm with international soundtrack and music. RAI asked a journalist to write a comment, in the movie read by Arnoldo Foà. I have found in the archives the original negatives of soundtrack and image and put together. Roberto Perpignani, at the time young editor of NELLA TERRA DI DON CHISCIOTTE, has seen a part of that in a moviola, and had exclaimed "this is how Orson left the film!". Now, without that disturbing and unuseful commentary, it is an experimental movie, free and powerful, very rich in the editing. I hope that you and other people in the Forum will have an occasion to see it. Please remember: it is not the Welles' final cut, but HOW he left the film before others had thought to "make it better" !
(the same story with other movies of him).
It will be shown on August 9th at 15.15 with a full duration of 3 hours and 48 minutes.
As usual, forgive my english..

Thank you for that interesting information, Andrej. I know Jonathon Rosenbaum described "In the Land of Don Quixote" as "amiable hackwork", but I'll settle for some amiable hackwork by Orson Welles anytime, especially if it's in his own original version which hasn't been seen before.

I must say the Locarno Fest has shown very good taste in it's programming, even in those films where Welles appears only as an actor. I noticed the Locarno lineup also includes a documentary by Andrew Labarthe. Would this be "The Big O", the film that accused Henry Jaglom of secretly taping Welles?

To answer Vidamonte's question several posts back, as far as I know, the workshops are open to everyone attending the Orson Welles retrospective free of charge.

andrej, thank you for information. What a treasure you found!
It must have been great feeling listening those tapes and hear that familiar voice.
Unfortunately my plane leaves in the afternoon so I can't be at the screening, but I'm working on to get PRESS accreditation and I think then I can watch it at my own time.
