Chrissie: I saw that Merv apperance "live", and I believe Merv asked him how he was, and Welles laughed and said something like "terrible!"; is my memory right on this?

Also, do you have the Johnny Carson where he is hosting, and Vincent Price and Terry Garr are the guests? It's fabulous! Vincent tells OW that he has a picture of his father holding Welles' father's head on a platter: Welles is amazed to hear this, and Vincent explains it's something to do with a play they were doing on John the Baptist, or something like that. Then Terri comes on and says she's had to do so many bad pictures, such as Beach Party movies, in order to eat, to which OW consoles her saying "Don't worry: I've had to do a lot of horrible pictures too" to which Vincent adds "You've had to do a lot of horrible pictures, and I've had to do a lot of horror pictures!". If I'm not confusing 2 shows, I think OW also does a magic trick which doesn't work!

Worth getting if you can.

I just received my Region 2 (UK) DVD of Treasure Island and after reading that some of the Direction in the movie could be/is by Welles, there is no doubt in my mind that this is the case. In fact, not withstanding the denials of whomever was involved with this film in saying that Welles didn't direct any of it.

I would guess, just from watching it through in detail that 70% was directed by Welles, given his certain style, unless it was just completely and totally imitated in every fashion. Interesting to say the least. By the way, as far as dubbing in a completely different voice for Orson as Silver, I thought something sounded a bit odd with his voice, the PAL speedup aside.

Pretty good movie actually. The print looks like it was taken directly from a VHS copy, not great, not bad.

I'm glad to have it, given that there don't seem to be a any Region 1 copies available on DVD.

I think it's underrated. I find the mise-en-scène to be consistantly original, creative, and intricate. I don't rightly know where it fits in the Wellesian oeuvre, but if they ever do an 'Official Orson Welles Collection' dvd box, I could see 'em sticking it in somewhere.

A complete Welles boxed-set with his own directed films? One hopes it will happen one day - it would be quite a diplomatic coup - On a shorter term, I'd like to see a boxed set with movies that have lots of scenes he directed - and various tidbits - you could easily go 5 dvd's, even 10 - or else a box set with a bunch of decent Welles acting in decent movies - I don't know - Compulsion, A man for all seasons, or whatever...

I saw Ulmer's "Goodbye Mr Germ" on TCM a few weeks ago. Pretty good, in an Ed Wood kind of way. If Ulmer wasn't the director of Robot Monster in 3D, he certainly could have been.

Apparently, there's a name for the guy who redid Welles' voice.

..,Over the next couple of decades, Towers continued to raid the popular classics. In Treasure Island (UK/France, d. John Hough/Andrew White, 1972), Orson Welles essayed Long John Silver, also contributing to the screenplay as 'O.W. Jeeves'. The hit and run nature of the production, photographed on location along various European coastlines, resulted in Welles' dialogue being post-synchronised by voice artiste Robert Rietty. Meanwhile, credit problems obliged the nomadic Towers to remove himself to Canada, where he took citizenship and relaunched his career from Toronto, drawing on substantial overseas investment. The 1973 film of Jack London's Call of the Wild (d. Ken Annakin) - starring Charlton Heston - was a British / German / Spanish / Italian / French co-production.
