The Trial on Video

The Trial is another Welles film that has fallen into public domain, so there are consequently numerous subpar, low quality versions available for purchase. The best version comes from the Milestone Collection and is available on DVD and VHS. It is also the most expensive, but you get what you pay for. The under-$10 versions are not worth the money. US DVD version , Region 1 release. Distributed by Image Entertainment. Catalog number IM5933MLSDVD. Widescreen format. Contains theatrical trailer and Desilu TV opening.
US laserdisc release. Predecessor to DVD version above. Contains essay not replicated in DVD version. Presented by the Roan Group. Out of print. Same extras as DVD.
French DVD release by Studio Canal/Universal. Contains original version of film and edited 1984 version, which cuts the pinscreen prologue. Also contains the deleted scene between Anthony Perkins and Katina Paxinou, albeit without sound. Further extras include photo gallery and documentary. Anamorphic widescreen; Region 2 coded PAL format disc. Original English and French mono soundtracks.
French VHS release.
Citizen Welles. Includes Stranger, The Trial, and Hearts of Age. Focusfilm, catalog # FF9355. Includes stills, commentaries by critic Jeffrey Lyons on each film. Disc only includes Dolby 5.1 remix of soundtrack, without original mono track.
