The Criterion Collection announced today its first 4K Ultra HD releases: Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Dr., The Red Shoes and A Hard Day’s Night.
Each title will be available in a 4K UHD+Blu-ray combo pack including a 4K UHD disc of the feature film, as well as the film and its special features on Blu-ray. Select films will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos.
Further details will be announced next week, though Wellesnet has heard a new restoration of Citizen Kane is among the big surprises. Warner Home Video did a restoration in 2011.
We previously reported the 80th anniversary set will contain a new commentary track by Jonathan Rosenbaum and James Naremore.
In 2016, Warner Bros. agreed to license Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons and Journey Into Fear to the Criterion Collection for future DVD and Blu-ray releases.
In addition to The Magnificent Ambersons, Criterion has released other Welles titles including Othello (with Filming Othello), Mr. Arkadin, Chimes at Midnight, Immortal Story and F for Fake on DVD, Blu-ray or both.
Citizen Kane had the distinction of being the first film in The Criterion Collection, released on laserdisc in 1984.
As part of the 80th anniversary of Citizen Kane, Fathom Events will show the film at select movie theaters nationwide, on Sunday, September 19, and Wednesday, September 22.
