A jacket worn by Orson Welles in the landmark film Citizen Kane is on the auction block in Los Angeles this month.
The screen costume, featured in the scene where Charles Foster Kane performs with a troupe of dancing girls, is part of Profiles in History’s The Icons & Legends of Hollywood sale on Sept. 25-26.
In the scene, Kane removes the jacket and tosses it to Jed Leland (Joseph Cotten).
The auction house estimates the navy blue wool coat, which is lined in black silk, will fetch somewhere between $20,000 and $30,000 at auction.
Once part of the fabled Western Star Costume Collection, the jacket is described as having a shawl collar, two faux diagonal hip slash pockets, cuff sleeves, and faux self button front closure. (Note: It is missing a button and shows some signs of wear.)
The Kane jacket is not the only suit coat worn by a Hollywood legend to find itself on the block this month.
Here is a sampling of offerings with the expected sale prices: Double-breasted tailcoat worn by Laurence Olivier in Pride and Prejudice, $1,00 to $1,500; dress coat used by Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind, $20,000 to $30,000; and Errol Flynn’s frock coat from Captain Blood, $40,000 to $60,000.
There are also costumes and memorabilia from such films as The Wizard of Oz, King Kong and The Ten Commandments.
Profiles in History estimates total sales from the two-day The Icons & Legends of Hollywood will reach $10 million.
