The Directors Guild of America honored Orson Welles on the 100th anniversary of his birth with a panel discussion and screening of the documentary Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles on May 30.
The panel was introduced by Jeremy Kagen, chair of the DGA Special Projects Committee, and moderated by Magician director Chuck Workman.
Participants included three directors with ties to Welles: Peter Bogdanovich (The Other Side of the Wind, co-author with Welles of This Is Orson Welles), Henry Jaglom (A Safe Place, Somebody to Love) and John Landis (producer of the unfilmed The Crade Will Rock).
Considering the unflattering portrayal of both Bogdanovich and Landis in Jaglom’s 2013 book My Lunches With Orson, it might have been uncomfortable gathering for the three. If so, it is proof of their respect for Welles that they all took part.
On a side note, here’s hoping that Bogdanovich used the event to plug the Indiegogo drive to complete The Other Side of the Wind either during the panel talk or at the reception.
