Orson Welles will be honored in his beloved Spain at an eight-week program organized by the Filmoteca de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Coinciding with the centenary of his birth and the 50th anniversary of the filming of Chimes at Midnight in Cardona, the Filmoteca de Catalunya has organized a May 6 – June 30 marathon of 35 Welles-related titles.
“As Welles was more than a filmmaker, we will devote more than a retrospective,” Esteve Riambau, director of Filmoteca de Catalunya, said at a press conference on Wednesday.
One of the “unique moments” of the program will take place in the Collegiate Cardona, where the restoration of Chimes at Midnight will be screened with co-star Keith Baxter in attendance. An exhibition of photographs taken during the filming of Chimes at Midnight is also planned during the festival.
An international symposium, Orson Welles: A Multidisciplinary Artist, is planned for June 3-5 with the participation of the filmmaker’s eldest daughter, Chris Welles Feder, and several noted Welles’ experts, including Joseph McBride and Stefan Drössler.
In addition, there will be a presentation of three books, the premiere of a play, and a radio special.
The Filmoteca de Catalunya program will include Welles’ landmark film Citizen Kane, though organizers had hoped the still unfinished The Other Side of the Wind would have been completed in time for the festival, Riambau said. Instead, it will be represented by work print footage from the Munich Film Museum.
