A major restoration of the film was undertaken in 2009 to mark its 60th anniversary. The original nitrate picture negative and corresponding nitrate optical sound track negative had been stored at Pinewood Studio outside London.

The award-winning team at Deluxe Restoration carried out the new 4K digital restoration of The Third Man on behalf of Studiocanal.

Following  what was described as a rigorous comparison of different available elements,  the 4K scan was done from a fine grain master positive struck from the original negative. Release prints were used as a reference for the grading.

StudioCanal will release a region B/2 Blu-ray and DVD set in Europe on July 20, according to Blu-ray.com A combo Blu-ray/ DVD/ CD box set loaded with extras is also planned.

There has been no announcement regarding a U.S. home video release.

Special thanks to Joseph McBride for notifying us about the screenings.
