Frank Sinatra, a longtime friend of Welles, will be feted in a new HBO documentary Sinatra: All or Nothing at All, which will will air over two nights, April 5 and 6.
The four-hour HBO special will debut eight months before the 100th anniversary of Sinatra’s birth on Dec. 12, 1915. His record labels are planning reissues to mark the milestone.
The Other Side of the Wind producer Frank Marshall and Academy Award winning director Alex Gibney have put together the documentary, which will focus on the first 60 years of Sinatra’s life. It will feature commentary from Ol’Blue Eyes, friends and family.
Sinatra: All or Nothing at All uses the setlist from Sinatra’s 1971 “Retirement Concert” as a springboard to examine his life and music. HBO has released a trailer promoting the special.
Sinatra and Welles had a relationship that dated back to the 1940s. Both campaigned for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Sinatra invested in Welles’ never-completed Don Quixote in the 1950s and was godfather to his youngest daughter, Beatrice. Sinatra was also the host of the AFI Lifetime Achievement ceremony honoring Welles in 1975.
