Grave of ‘The Trial’ actress Romy Schneider desecrated

Orson Welles, Romy Schneider and Anthony Perkins on the set of The Trial.

The grave of The Trial actress Romy Schneider, who died in 1982, was desecrated over the weekend in Boissy-sans-Avoir, France.

According to AFP, one or more individuals unsealed the tombstone and moved it, causing the vault to open. European newspapers reported that the actress’ remains were untouched.

An investigation is underway.

Boissy-sans-Avoir, a quiet, remote Yvelines town, was described as a refuge for the 43-year-old actress, following the accidental death of her son, David, in July 1981.

Schneider was found dead in her Paris apartment on May 29, 1982.

It was initially believed that Schneider had committed suicide by taking a lethal mix of alcohol and sleeping pills. However, authorities later determined that she had died from cardiac arrest. (She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Biasini.)

Welles had noted in a 1962 interview with the BBC how important it was for him to work with actors of the caliber of Schneider, Anthony Perkins and Jeanne Moreau on The Trial.  It was the first film Welles had directed in four years after being forced out of the editing of Touch of Evil.
