The Mercury Theatre On the Air’s infamous October 30, 1938 radio broadcast about a Martian invasion has inspired an upcoming comedy.
Tony Hale, Heather Burns, Anna Camp and Raymond J. Barry will star in Brave New Jersey, an indie comedy that tells the story of a small New Jersey town on the night Orson Welles’ The War of the Worlds was broadcast on the CBS radio network.
Jody Lambert (People Like Us) is directing a script he co-wrote with Michael Dowling, according to Deadline.
Production is already underway in Friendship, Tennessee, and surrounding communities. It is slated to continue through late July.
There have been previous movies and TV episodes that have referenced the Mercury Theatre broadcast, most notably The Night That Panicked America, a 1975 made-for-TV movie written by Nicholas Meyer.
