‘It’s All True: Orson Welles’s Pan-American Odyssey’ now in Portuguese

Catherine L. Benamou’s exhaustively researched book, It’s All True: Orson Welles’s Pan-American Odyssey, has been published in Portuguese by Editora UNESP of Brazil.

The book, first published by University of California Press in 2007, documents Welles ill-fated trek to Brazil to shoot a documentary at the behest of the U.S. government. The film was shelved by the studio and contributed to Welles’ dismissal by RKO Pictures.

The Portuguese language edition of It’s All True: Orson Welles’s Pan-American Odyssey is available from the publisher at https://editoraunesp.com.br/catalogo/9786557111482,it%E2%80%99s-all-true

“The book was translated by Fernando Santos. I added a new foreword in Portuguese with updates on the preservation effort,” Benamou told Wellesnet.

Benamou, an associate producer and senior researcher on the 1993 documentary It’s All True: Based on an Unfinished Film by Orson Welles, broke the news last June that Paramount Pictures is scanning the remaining 82-year-old nitrate footage from It’s All True to guarantee its preservation.

It’s All True: Orson Welles’s Pan-American Odyssey was first published by University of California Press in 2007. Noted Welles scholar Jonathan Rosenbaum hailed the book at the time of its release as  “eye-opening and sometimes mind-blowing… There are important discoveries to be found on virtually every page of this book.”

Benamou is a professor of Film & Media Studies at University of California at Irvine and a former associate professor at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
