
Janus Films has acquired The Eyes of Orson Welles and will give the documentary, which premiered in the Cannes Classics lineup, a 2019 release in the U.S., Variety reported
Janus tweeted the news under the banner, “Coming soon.”
At Cannes, The Eyes of Orson Welles garnered a special-distinction commendation in the Golden Eye Documentary Award.
The film explores Welles’ life and career through a trove of paintings and sketches he created throughout his life.
London-based Dogwoof will release the Mark Cousins film in the U.K. on Aug. 17. The feature documentary was produced by Bofa, in association with the BBC and Filmstruck, and supported by Creative Scotland’s Screen Fund.
Beatrice Welles granted Cousins the exclusive rights to make a film using her father’s artwork. The two met at the 2016 Traverse Film Festival in Michigan and mapped out the project with Michael Moore (Bowling for Columbine), who is an executive producer on The Eyes of Orson Welles.
Beatrice Welles served as a consultant to the documentary.
It will have its North American premiere at the Traverse City Film Festival on August 3.
The Eyes of Orson Welles will be shown at the Old Town Playhouse on August 3 at 9 p.m. and again the following day at 6 p.m. at City Opera House. Tickets and schedule information may be found at traversecityfilmfest.org/tickets/
