Joseph McBride shares rare Orson Welles audio in new podcast

In a recent podcast appearance, film historian Joseph McBride shared rare audio of Orson Welles directing him and Peter Bogdanovich at the start of filming The Other Side of the Wind in 1970.

McBride was a guest on the YouTube podcast Robert Bellissimo At The Movies, now in its fourth year. It was a return visit for McBride, who had been interviewed by Bellissimo a few months earlier about another Hollywood filmmaker.

“It was great having Joe again,” Bellissimo told Wellesnet. “I interviewed him in January for his John Ford book as well. He’s very generous and open – and a lot of fun to talk to.”

McBride, a biographer, screenwriter, and professor in the School of Cinema at San Francisco State University, has authored two books on Ford and three on Welles.

Welles cast McBride in the role of an earnest cineaste, Mr. Pister, in The Other Side if the Wind. McBride was present from the first day of filming and worked with the late Gary Graver to complete the movie following Welles’ death in 1985. He was a consultant on the 2018 completion by producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza for Netflix.
