Noted film historian and Orson Welles scholar Joseph McBride returns to his native Wisconsin this fall as the University of Wisconsin Cinematheque concludes its celebration of the works of Orson Welles.
To mark the centennial of Welles’ birth, Cinematheque has screened many of his films beginning in January.
The fourth and final installment in its Welles series begins on Friday, Sept. 4, with a showing of a 35mm print of the “Scottish” version on Macbeth.
A newly restored DCP of The Trial from Rialto Pictures will be screened on Sept. 11.
The Sidney Hayers-directed Southern Star co-starring Welles will be shown on Sept. 18.
McBride will offer Wellesiana on Sept. 25. The two and half hour presentation will feature rare footage. It was compiled with assistance from Bruce Goldstein and William Hohauser.
The following night, McBride will host a screening of The Magnificent Ambersons. Following a showing of the studio release print, McBride will present an hour-long look at Welles’ original vision for the 1942 film utilizing rare visual materials.
McBride is not only the film historian who uncovered The Hearts of Age, Welles and co-director William Vance’s teenage venture into filmmaking, but a co-star in Welles’ final film, the still-unreleased The Other Side of the Wind. He is the author of 17 books, including three on Welles.
