St. Martin’s Press will publish Orson Welles’s Last Movie: The Making of The Other Side of the Wind by Josh Karp on May 5, 2015 – the day before the 100th anniversary of the late filmmaker’s birth. The publisher has set up a web page promoting the boo at us.macmillan.com/orsonwellesslastmovie/joshkarp
“The Last Movie is a fast-paced, behind-the-scenes account of the bizarre, hilarious and remarkable making of what has been called “the greatest home movie that no one has ever seen.” Funded by the Shah of Iran’s brother-in-law, and based on a script that Welles rewrote every night for years, a final attempt to one-up his own best-work. It’s almost impossible to tell if art is imitating life or vice versa in the film. It’s a production best encompassed by its star, John Huston, who described the making of the film as ‘an adventure shared by desperate men that finally came to nothing.'”
The 288-page hardcover will carry a suggested price tag of $26.99, though amazon.com is already accepting pre-orders at $22.10
Orson Welles’s Last Movie had the working title An Adventure Shared By Desperate Men (That Finally Came to Nothing) when word of it first surfaced in 2011.
Karp has conducted scores of interviews with TOSOTW participants and family members for the book and examined footage from the unreleased film, which stars John Huston and Peter Bogdanovich He shared some of his insights at a gathering of Welles enthusiasts in Woodstock, Illinois, in May.
Early in the process, Karp detailed his interest in The Other Side of the Wind and research during an interview with Wellesnet.
